Curriculum & Foundations
A structured, sequential programme built on the fundamentals of fine art.
- Drawing from observation
- Anatomy, proportion & perspective
- Value, colour & composition
Fine Arts L'atelier assesses the curricula and teaching methods of art schools, courses and online programmes. We accredit only those that meet our standards, and those standards are demanding.
Art education has never been easier to find, and never harder to judge. Many programmes promise mastery. Far fewer give students the structure and discipline it takes to get there.
Fine Arts L'atelier exists to close that gap. We are an independent body that reviews how fine art is taught: the curriculum, the sequence of skills, the quality of instruction and the work students actually produce. When an institution earns FAL accreditation, students, parents and employers know it has been examined closely and held to a high bar.
We don't sell courses, and we don't accept fees in exchange for a favourable result.
Reviews are carried out by working artists and experienced art educators.
We judge student portfolios and observed teaching, not marketing material.
Accreditation is reviewed every year and has to be renewed in full every five.
Every applicant is measured against the same six standards. Each one is assessed separately and each one has to be met. Strength in one area doesn't make up for weakness in another.
A structured, sequential programme built on the fundamentals of fine art.
Instruction that is deliberate, demonstrated and grounded in proven atelier practice.
Instructors whose own body of work and teaching record show real command of the craft.
Clear, measurable progress in student work, shown through portfolios over time.
An environment, physical or digital, that actually supports serious study.
Fair, transparent assessment and honest communication with students.
“Talent is common. A rigorous education is not, and that is what we exist to protect.”The FAL founding principle
Whether you run a full academy, a single course or an online programme, the standards are the same. We adjust how we gather the evidence to suit each format.

Enquire about online reviewA thorough review takes time. Most applicants complete the process in four to eight months, depending on size and readiness.
An initial conversation and eligibility check to confirm the programme falls within our scope.
2–3 weeksThe applicant submits a detailed self-study: curriculum, syllabi, faculty records and student work.
6–10 weeksOur assessors examine the submission against all six standards and ask for anything that's missing.
4–6 weeksAssessors observe live or recorded teaching and review portfolios on site or remotely.
1–3 weeksAn independent panel decides. Accredited institutions receive the FAL seal and a public listing.
3–4 weeksAccreditation isn't a one-off certificate. Accredited institutions report to us every year, notify us of significant changes to curriculum or faculty, and go through a full re-assessment every five years to keep the seal.

Any provider of fine art education: independent ateliers, academies, university departments, individual course providers and online programmes. The programme must teach drawing, painting or sculpture as a serious discipline rather than as recreation.
Very. All six standards must be met in full, and we examine real evidence: syllabi, student portfolios and observed teaching. Many applicants are asked to make improvements before they are accredited, and we would rather defer a decision than lower the bar.
Yes. The standards don't change, only the way we gather evidence. For online programmes we look closely at lesson structure, the quality and frequency of individual feedback, critique processes and how student work progresses over time.
You'll get a written report that sets out exactly where you fell short and what's required. Applicants can address the findings and ask for a focused re-review within twelve months, without starting again from the beginning.
Contact us with the name of the institution or programme and we'll confirm its current status. Accredited institutions may only display the FAL seal while their accreditation is active.
Tell us about your school, course or programme. We'll send you the application pack and arrange an initial eligibility call.
